Gerda Bruns (born April 29, 1905 in Drulingen ; † February 12, 1970 in Berlin ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Life

Gerda Bruns was the eldest daughter of the veterinarian Hugo Bruns and his wife Cäcilie Bossow. Her youth was overshadowed by the First World War , her school years by several changes of school. At Easter 1924 she passed her Abitur at the humanistic grammar school in Göttingen . She then studied Classical Archeology , Egyptology and Greek Studies at the University of Göttingen , the University of Berlin , the University of Vienna and the University of Munich . In 1929 she did her doctorate with Paul Wolters in Munich with a thesis on The Huntress Artemis. Study of the origin of their representation . A work contract at the University of Heidelberg followed with her studies, with which she created an inventory of the gem casts of the archaeological seminar. In 1930 she became a volunteer at the Antikensammlung in Berlin . In addition, she was able to take part in a teaching excavation in Carinthia over the next few months . In late autumn, Bruns traveled to Turkey with the Wülfing grant , where she was involved in editing the archaeological-topographical card catalog of the Istanbul Department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). Between 1931 and 1933 she also worked on the Pergamon excavation under Theodor Wiegand . In May Bruns had to interrupt her job because of a tropical disease. It was not until 1935 that she was able to resume working as a volunteer at the Landesmuseum Kassel . In addition, she was temporarily entrusted with a work contract to reorganize the antiquities department of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum . In 1938 she received the order from the DAI to work through the excavation in the Kabiren shrine in Thebes from the estate of her teacher Paul Wolters . Since May 1939 Bruns worked again, now as a research assistant with a contract, for the antiquities department of the Berlin museums. Since 1945 she has been curator at the museum. On April 1, 1947, Bruns moved to the DAI headquarters in Berlin as a consultant.

In 1953 she completed her habilitation at the University of Freiburg with a thesis on The Great Cameo of France . In 1953 she was appointed Senior Scientific Adviser at the DAI and an adjunct professor. Since 1958 she has been based in Rome, where she published an archaeological journal index for the DAI. Until shortly before her death, Bruns led the excavations in the Kabiren shrine in Theban, despite the disease progressing.

Brun's career took place less in a university than in a museum and non-university institutional setting. The DAI entrusted her with responsible tasks on several occasions, such as the processing of the card catalog in Istanbul, the processing of Paul Wolters' excavation records and the journal catalog. She made a special contribution to the Berlin Collection of Antiquities. During the Second World War , she organized the relocation and backup of ancient artifacts and archive material from Berlin's Museum Island . Their relocation lists are still today a prime example of museum-specific documentation. Their careful work helped to prevent even worse damage to the collection. From 1946 to 1949 she also published the series of artworks from the Berlin collections .
