Gerhard Hümmelchen

Gerhard Hümmelchen ( April 2, 1927 - December 5, 2014 ) was a German military historian . For many years he was managing director of the working group for defense research .

Life

Hümmelchen did military service in the Wehrmacht Air Force from 1943 to 1945 . From 1950 to 1955 he studied history, art history and German at the universities in Heidelberg and Tübingen. From 1957 to 1959 he was a research fellow in the Air Force Study Group of the US Historical Division. In 1958 he was at Walther Peter Fuchs at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg with a thesis on the use of auxiliary cruiser during the German naval warfare 1940-43 taking into account the trade war operations of battleships and heavy cruisers 1939-42 to Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1959 to 1990 he was the managing director of the working group for defense research in Stuttgart. Together with Andreas Hillgruber , he compiled a chronicle of the Second World War in the Wehrwissenschaftlichen Rundschau .

Hümmelchen, a member of the CDU , was municipal councilor for the city of Winnenden from 1980 to 1994 .
