Gerhard Ries

Gerhard Ries (born August 31, 1943 in Fürstenfeldbruck ) is a German legal historian .

Gerhard Ries attended the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich from 1953 to 1962 and then studied law and ancient oriental languages ​​at the University of Munich . After the two exams in 1967 and 1971, he received his doctorate in 1972 on a topic of ancient oriental legal history . Following his habilitation in 1979 in the subjects of ancient legal history , Roman law and civil law , he held various professorships until 1981. a. in Heidelberg , Freiburg and Regensburg before he received a visiting professorship at the University of Kyoto in 1983 . In 1994 Ries was appointed to the chair for Ancient Legal History, Roman Law and German Civil Law at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg . From 1997 until his retirement in 2008 he held the chair for Ancient Legal History and Civil Law at the University of Munich.

In addition to frequent research stays and lecturing activities as a visiting professor in Japan, Ries was also legal advisor to the Legislative Council of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria on behalf of Harvard University in the early 1990s . He is also involved in training foreign lawyers in German law and is chairman of the Friends' Association of the Law Faculty at the University of Munich.
