The Gernkopf is 417.2 m above sea level. NN high mountain in Hesse . It is located about 1.4 kilometers southwest of the small village of Oberthalhausen in the municipality of Ludwigsau in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district . The mountain belongs to the eastern foothills of the Knüllgebirge , in the Neuenstein-Ludwigsecker ridge .
At the Gernkopf there is an abandoned quarry in which basalt was extracted in the past . It is assumed that it is an old volcanic vent. According to the Ludwigsau community, the “Am Gernkopf” quarry is a natural monument .
