history
In 1871, the city of Düsseldorf submitted an application to the Prussian state to build an additional “citizens' school” that should enable pupils to acquire the so-called secondary school leaving certificate. French should be taught as a foreign language. In 1872, this new “Higher Citizens School” began teaching in downtown Düsseldorf. The Prussian Ministry of Culture had also made teaching English compulsory.
In April 1888, the building of the school at Fürstenwall No. 100 was inaugurated according to plans by the city master builder Eberhard Westhofen and in 1896 it was expanded to become a "Latin-free upper secondary school". Between 1892 and 1900 up to 600 students attended the school per year. One of these students was the later writer Heinrich Spoerl , who in the Feuerzangenbowle portrayed the originality and oddity of teachers of the time. In 1900 the first students passed their Abitur at Fürstenwall. Hugo Henkel was one of them .
In 1942 the school building on Fürstenwall was hit by bombs and burned down to the facade. In 1945, classes began on Ellerstraße together with the Lessing Gymnasium in so-called shift classes . In 1946 the school was renamed the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium after the resistance fighters of the White Rose Sophie and Hans Scholl, in order to be a model for the students and teachers for political engagement.
In 1961 the school moved into the current building on Redinghovenstrasse in the immediate vicinity of the Volksgarten .
In September 2015, around 60 wind instruments worth 50,000 euros were stolen when the music room was broken into.
School camp Hitzenlinde
The Hitzenlinde school camp has belonged to the school's development association since 1924. It is located in the area of the city of Leutkirch near Friesenhofen and the Eschach flows directly past the house. Because of the intensive use and the close ties to the school community, it is also called “the second house”. Schoolchildren take part in trips to the home at least four times during their school years.
In 1939 the intensive use of the home by the school (at that time still Oberrealschule am Fürstenwall) was interrupted. It was not until 1950 that it returned to the school administration of what is now the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium. The tenacity of the home manager couple Jugel (1928–1958) ensured the house's preservation in these difficult years. On September 14, 1953, the founder of the home, Ernst Lüdemann, died during a stay at the home on a class hike.
