Gesta Martyrum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The gesta martyrum (deeds of the martyrs) are a collection of Latin stories about the life and martyrdom of Roman Christians in pre-Constantine times. The writing of the around one hundred anonymous writings is likely to have taken place in the earliest during the 5th and 6th centuries, but a smaller number is much more recent ( Carolingian period). The gesta are in the same hagiographic tradition as the Liber Pontificalis and provide information about the self-view of Christianity and the veneration of saints in late antiquity . As a result, they acquire literary importance as a link between ancient and medieval romantic traditions .
