The Austrian health number 1450 - “When it hurts! 1450 “- sees itself as the first point of contact for health issues. Specially trained qualified nursing staff advise callers on health problems.

If the callers do not know who to turn to because of their complaints, the trained employees use a medical-scientific query system to answer specific questions - taking into account the current whereabouts - to make suitable recommendations for behavior. With this, the Austrian emergency number 144, acceptance points in ambulances and doctors in the private practice can be relieved at a low-threshold level .

The medical advice helpline began as a pilot project "TeWeb" ( Te lefon- and Web -based Erstkontakt- and advisory services) on April 7, 2017 Vienna, Lower Austria and Vorarlberg and went on 4 November 2019 in Austria in operation. The number can be reached 24 hours a day and also on weekends. The caller only incurs the usual telephone costs according to his telephone tariff.

Telephone health advice is provided by the federal states , the umbrella association of social insurance institutions and the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection .

COVID-19 pandemic

This number became known, especially at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Austria , as potential COVID-19 sufferers should never go to the doctor or ambulance to reduce the risk of infection. Due to the spread of the coronavirus, there were around 70 times the number of calls in mid-March. Due to the high number of inquiries and the resulting overload, it was asked that only those specifically affected should call with a specific question. For general questions about the corona virus, the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) set up an information hotline on January 27, 2020 at 0800/555621.
