Gisèle Marie "Gigi" Marvin (* 7. March 1987 in Warroad , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who since the season 2015/16 at the Boston Pride in the National Women's Hockey League on the position of the defense plays. Marvin has been a member of the United States' national women's ice hockey team since 2006 and is a multiple world and Olympic champion. Marvin's grandfather Cal Marvin was also active as an ice hockey player and for many years as a coach and official, for which he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .

Career

Marvin played at Warroad High School during her high school years between 2001 and 2005 , where her family was the third generation of the school's ice hockey program. Her grandfather Cal Marvin was associated with the school for decades and was subsequently inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame due to his services . After graduating from high school, Gigi Marvin moved to the University of Minnesota , where she studied for the next four years. In parallel, she played for the university team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .

In her first year of college , the then striker made the leap into the squad of the United States women's national ice hockey team and took part in the 2006 4 Nations Cup with them. A few months later, he won a silver medal at the 2007 World Cup . The following year, Marvin remained successful and won gold again at the 2008 World Cup . After successfully completing her studies in spring 2009 and winning another gold medal at the 2009 World Cup , the offensive player switched to the US Hockey Association USA Hockey for the 2009/10 season , where she prepared with the selection squad for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . There she added another silver medal to her collection of medals.

For the 2010/11 season , Marvin joined the Minnesota Whitecaps from the Western Women's Hockey League , with whom they won the league's championship trophy. In addition, she celebrated her third world title in the 2011 world championships. Following the World Cup, the attacker moved to the Canadian Women's Hockey League for the Boston Blades , for which she ran for the following two years. During this period, the American won the Clarkson Cup with the Blades in 2013, as well as a silver medal at the 2012 World Cup and a gold medal at the 2013 World Cup - equivalent to her fourth world title. In the summer of 2013, Marvin was again recruited by USA Hockey in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and spent the entire season there, during which she retrained as a defender. She concluded the competition by winning the Olympic silver medal again. Marvin then took a year-long hiatus, both nationally and internationally.

The defender did not return to play until the 2015/16 season and from then on played for the Boston Pride in the newly founded National Women's Hockey League . She played for the national team for the first time at the 4 Nations Cup 2015 . With the Boston Pride, Marvin won the Isobel Cup at the end of the season and was also named the best defensive player in the league. In the following game year she lost to the Buffalo Beauts with the Pride in the final . Nevertheless, she successfully concluded the season by winning her fifth world title. In the summer of 2017, Marvin began preparing with USA Hockey for her third Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , where she eventually won Olympic gold.
