The young Gila River in New Mexico |
The Gila River [ ˈhiːlə ˈɹɪvɚ ] is a river in the southwestern United States . It rises in New Mexico and flows into the Colorado River after 1044 km near Yuma in the US state of Arizona .
The river was established as the border between the United States and Mexico in the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848 and served this function until 1853 , when US rule was extended to the areas south of the Gila River with the Gadsden purchase .
The term "Gila" also appears in Gila County , the Gila Mountains , the Gila National Forest and in the name of an endemic species of animal in the area, the Gila crustacean , also known as the Gila Monster , and the Gilaspecht ( Melanerpes uropygialis ).
