Gilbert Jay Arenas Jr. (born January 6, 1982 in Tampa , Florida ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2001 to 2012 . The 3-time NBA All-Star was long considered a strong scorer and had two seasons in which he averaged almost 30 points per game. In addition to his All-Star nominations, Arenas has been elected to the All-NBA team 3 times and won the Most Improved Player award in 2003 .

Arenas was banned for most of the 2009-10 season . The reasons for this were gun possession in December 2009 and subsequent minor offenses related to it.

Career

College time and draft

Gilbert Arenas spent two seasons in college at the University of Arizona , averaging 15.8 points per game. Despite a successful college career, analysts gave him no chance in the NBA. After the Golden State Warriors drafted him in the 2001 NBA draft in the second round, he changed his jersey number to "0". The zero stands for the fact that so-called experts prophesied "zero" points for him in the NBA. Arenas didn't want to be put off by that and then played in the NBA after months of hard training.

NBA

Arenas got several appearances in its debut season and surprised in 47 games with 10.3 points per game. In his sophomore year, his score increased to 18.3 points per game and was named Most Improved Player by the NBA .

In the summer of 2003, Arenas joined the Washington Wizards . Since he wasn't a restricted free agent at the time , the Warriors couldn't catch up with the Wizards offer, especially since Arenas wasn't a first-round draft pick . Later, the "Gilbert Arenas Rule" was introduced, which allows NBA teams to extend their second-round picks, even after the contract has expired, under certain conditions. In the 2004–05 season , Arenas scored 25.5 points per game and, along with Larry Hughes, led the Wizards to the NBA playoffs. This year he also received his first of a total of three All-Star nominations (2005, 2006 and 2007).

In the 2006/07 season Gilbert Arenas was one of the top 5 scorers in the NBA with 29.3 points per game. That season he also broke the Washington Wizards franchise record for points in a game from Earl Monroe (60 points against the LA Lakers for Kobe Bryant ). Gilbert Arenas, also known as "Agent Zero", also scored 54 points against the Phoenix Suns and 51 against the Utah Jazz . He was also a successful thrower in the last seconds of a game. These last minute throws are also called buzzer beaters . Arenas was popular with the fans during this time, which was shown in the All-Star Game in 2007 when he was the first player to oust Vince Carter from the starting five .

In the 2007/08 season , Arenas was only able to play 13 games in the regular season due to a knee injury. Although he was in the rotation again in the playoffs, he played ailing and received comparatively few minutes of play.

Despite his injuries, he signed a major new contract with the Wizards in June 2008 that should gross him $ 124 million over six years . The Golden State Warriors were also interested in him and offered him a similar contract. In the following season, however, he was thrown back from injuries and only played two games.

In early January 2010, Gilbert Arenas was suspended for an initially indefinite period. The reason for this was the unloaded firearms in his locker at the Verizon Center and his handling of the situation. He wrote numerous Twitter posts making fun of the incident. The final suspension of Arenas came about after he formed a symbolic pistol with his fingers in the team circle before the game against the Philadelphia 76ers and pointed it at his teammates. After the suspension was pronounced, a large advertising banner featuring Arenas was removed from the wall of the Verizon Center. On January 15, Arenas was charged with illegal gun possession, and Arenas pleaded guilty. However, he remained at large.

On January 27, the suspension was extended by the NBA until the end of the season and extended to Javaris Crittenton , who was involved in the dispute . Arenas was sentenced on March 26 to two years suspended prison sentence and 400 hours of community service. His advertising contract with Adidas was terminated by the company due to his conviction. Originally, Arenas wanted to play with the shirt number "6" from the 2010/11 season ; In the end, however, he decided on the number "9".

In mid-December 2010, the Wizards traded their highly paid star player to the Orlando Magic . In return, the Wizards received Rashard Lewis from the Magic, who had a similarly large contract there as Arenas and could not meet the expectations of Magic. Arenas wore the number "1" on his back. After the 2010/11 season he was released by the Magic using the so-called "amnesty clause". If the clause is used, players' salaries still have to be paid, but they are no longer offset against the luxury tax or the team's upper salary limit.

After that, Arenas was a free agent until he was signed by the Memphis Grizzlies in March 2012 to a drastically reduced salary for the remainder of the 2011/12 season . For the 2012/13 season Arenas received no new contract in Memphis.

For the 2012/13 season Arenas failed to return to the NBA and he moved to China to the Shanghai Sharks in October . He played a year for the Sharks and missed the play-offs with them . After the season he left the team and has been without a club since then.

In 2019 he signed a contract in the BIG-3 basketball league founded by Ice Cube .
