Giorgio Ascanelli

Giorgio Ascanelli (born February 23, 1959 in Ferrara , Emilia-Romagna ) is an Italian engineer in Formula 1 .

Career

Ascanelli began his career in motorsport in 1985 as a calculation engineer with the Ferrari Formula 1 team . In 1987 he moved to Abarth in the World Rally Championship , but returned to Ferrari at the end of the year as a race engineer from Gerhard Berger . After Berger's move to McLaren , Ascanelli followed John Barnard to Benetton in 1990 , where he worked as Nelson Piquet 's race engineer until his resignation at the end of 1991 . In 1992 Ascanelli came to McLaren at Berger's request, but worked there with Ayrton Senna .

After Senna's move to Williams , Ascanelli returned to Ferrari in 1995, where he met Berger and Barnard again. He worked there as a racing engineer for both Berger and his teammate Jean Alesi . After Ross Brawn took over this position in 1998, Ascanelli moved to Ferrari's R&D department as head . From 2002 to 2006 he was Technical Director of the Maserati GT team and since the 2007 season he has been working in the same position for the Scuderia Toro Rosso Formula 1 team . In July 2012, Ascanelli was given leave of absence; His successor is the former Sauber designer James Key .
