biography
There is no reliable information about the place of birth and the first few years of life. De Pomis later referred to himself as pictor laudensis ( painter from Lodi ), on the other hand a Pietro de Poma with proven origins from Brusino Arsizio between 1588 and 1593 at the court of Archduke Ferdinand II is attested.
De Pomis seems to have been a student of the Venetian Jacopo Tintoretto . Before he worked in Graz, de Pomis was employed as a chamber painter by Archduke Ferdinand II in Tyrol from 1588 to 1595 . On October 25, 1595 he married Judith Anna Dermoyen, the daughter of a Dutch master wallpaperer. In the same year his son Johannes Baptist and in 1596 his daughter Elisabeth were born. With his wife, de Pomis had a total of 13 children, some of whom died early. The two sons Johannes Baptist and Johann Nikolaus perished in the Turkish war .
The Italian-born artist was appointed court artist under Archduke Ferdinand (later Emperor Ferdinand II) in the Styrian capital Graz in 1595 . This was followed by trips with his patron to Rome and Loreto and to Spain with Archduchess Maria. During this time, De Pomis made the acquaintance of his future client, Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg . In 1600 the artist was awarded his own coat of arms and in 1601 was a military engineer in Ferdinand's entourage in Kanicsa . In addition to his work as a painter, medalist and architect, he was also a fortress builder in Gorizia , Trieste , Gradisca and Fiume .
In 1619 he founded the painters' confraternity in Graz and was elected to the board of directors. On February 10, 1623 in Regensburg, Ferdinand II gave confirmation of the nobility, an improvement in the coat of arms and this gave de Pomis the title of Truiberg. The last years of the court artist's life were marked by embezzlement of building funds (1630) and disagreements with the court chamber. Giovanni Pietro de Pomis, who died on March 6, 1633 at the age of 63 after a long illness, was buried in the Mariahilferkirche in Graz . After his death, his widow and four daughters stayed behind.
