Route of the Giro

The 1st Giro d'Italia took place from May 13th to 30th, 1909. The bike race consisted of eight stages with a total length of 2,448 kilometers.

The editor of the Gazzetta dello Sport Eugenio Camillo Costamagna and the editors Armando Cougnet and Tullo Morgagni were the initiators of the first Giro , inspired by the Tour de France . It was financed with the help of the Italian Cycling Federation, the Corriere della Sera and various company sponsors. The stages were not run on consecutive days, but with one or two days of interruption, based on the publication days of the Gazzetta : The newspaper appeared on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, so the stages took place on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

127 drivers started in Milan on May 13 at 02:53 a.m. 49 of them reached their destination again on May 30th. The average speed of the overall winner Luigi Ganna , who was able to decide three stages in his favor, was 27.260 km / h. The team competition, which was also held, was won by the Italian team Atala .

After Dario Beni had secured the first pink jersey in history by winning the first Giro stage , Luigi Ganna captured the coveted jersey on the second stage. With his victories in the fourth, fifth and seventh stages, he manifested his leading position in the overall standings and did not give up his jersey until his return to Milan.
