Girolamo Marini (around 1500 - June 22, 1553 ) was an Italian architect and military engineer. He is considered one of the masters of defensive architecture of the 16th century.

Life

Marini was born around 1500 in Bologna (according to other sources in Casara near Modena , from which the family is said to have moved to Bologna soon). Marini, who left Bologna because of the conflict over the rule of the Bentivoglio , is said to have come into contact with Antonio da Sangallo the Younger , with whom he is said to have worked on the fortification of Ancona . In the thirties of the 16th century he is said to have been a military engineer in the service of Pope Clement VII and also to have stayed in Rome . From 1536 he was in the service of the French King Franz I. In 1537 he carried out fortification work in the then partially French-occupied Piedmont , namely in Bene Vagienna , Centallo and Moncalieri . Possibly he also developed the plan for the citadel in Pinerolo . From 1543 he was involved in the establishment of the defensive fortifications of Landrecies . He then worked in Luxembourg and Saint-Dizier . Around 1545 he fortified the border with the Holy Roman Empire . He died on June 22, 1553 when the city of Thérouanne in northern France was destroyed by the troops of Emperor Charles V.

plant

Marini was involved in the construction of the fortresses of Maubert-Fontaine , Mézières , Mouzon , Villefranche-sur-Meuse , Chaumont , Coissy , Ligny and in the construction of artillery fortifications in Luxembourg . He also created the plan for the new construction of the town of Vitry-le-François (1544/1545). He further strengthened the fortification of the Butte of Sainte-Menehould .
