Gisbert Große-Brauckmann

Gisbert Große-Brauckmann (born May 12, 1926 in Göttingen ; † April 25, 2001 in Darmstadt ) was a German biologist and university professor .

The son of a classical philologist studied biology at the University of Göttingen . In 1952 he received his doctorate under Franz Firbas . The topic of his dissertation was: " Studies on the ecology, especially the water balance of ruderal societies ". After a short time as a scientific assistant to Firbas, he got a position as custodian at the state moor research station in Bremen , where he primarily examined moor profiles and published several publications on them.

In 1967 he received a position as curator with Hubert Ziegler at the University of Darmstadt , where he also completed his habilitation . In 1971 he was appointed university professor. He held this position until his retirement in 1991.

During this time he headed the geobotany working group. The main areas of research were palaeoecology and research into the scientific basis of nature conservation. Große-Brauckmann was a globally recognized specialist in the field of peatland research, especially when it came to the reconstruction of earlier habitats with the help of large-scale plant remains.

Since 1953 he was married to Helga Große-Brauckmann , an important mycologist .
