history

In 1961, the so-called Guitarama coup took place in Guitarama . All mayors and councilors had been invited to a conference. At this conference, a transitional constitution was surprisingly adopted, a provisional parliament and a transitional president appointed. This event led to the end of the monarchy and the proclamation of the Republic of Rwanda.

In the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide , Guitarama Prison was (over) one of the country's eleven prisons.
