Giuseppe Ferlini's grave inscription in Bologna

Giuseppe Ferlini (born April 23, 1797 in Bologna ; † December 29, 1870 there ) was an Italian doctor and adventurer.

He served in Sannar and Khartoum as a surgeon in the Egyptian army, which had ruled parts of Sudan since 1821 . From there he visited the pyramids of Meroe in 1834 and destroyed some of them in search of treasure. He found Queen Amanishakheto's jewelry and tried to sell them to various museums, but nobody in Europe at the time believed that such high-quality objects could come from sub-Saharan Africa . Eventually they were bought by museums in Berlin and Munich , where they are still located today.

A report of his excavations was published in Italian in Bologna in 1837 , and a French translation was published in Rome in 1838.
