Giuseppe Zocchi (born 1711 / also 1717 in Florence ; died 1767 there ) was an Italian painter and draftsman who lived in Florence and was known for his Florentine vedutas .

Life

Zocchi came from a poor family and began his career in Florence under the protection of Andrea Gerini, who sent him to Venice, where he was introduced to engraving, Milan, Bologna and Rome. He created frescoes for Gerini in his palace in via Ricasoli. Gerini commissioned Zocchi with the recording of well-known views of Florence , the drawings were engraved by him and others and printed in two series in 1744. One with 24 views and a map of Florence under the title Scelta XXIV vedute delle principali contrade, piazze, chiese, e palazzi della citta di Firenze ; the second contained fifty engravings under the title Vedute delle ville e di altri luoghi della Toscana .

Zocchi worked from 1750 for the Florentine workshop Opificio delle Pietre Dure and created there designs for mosaics in stone and wood mosaics , so for the Grand Duke of Tuscany Francis Stephen and thus for the Viennese court of the Habsburgs , and for the Berlin court of the Hohenzollern . His furniture is now in the Vienna Hofburg , the Louvre and the Palazzo Pitti . In the Sala del Palio in the Palazzo Salimbeni in Siena, two oil paintings can be seen today ( Veduta notturna della Piazza del Campo con fiaccolata e corteo per la venuta a Siena del Granduca Francesco I duca di Lorena e Maria Teresa Arciduchessa d'Austria il 2 aprile 1739 and Veduta diurna della Piazza del Campo col Palio corso in onore del Granduca Francesco I duca di Lorena e Maria Teresa Arciduchessa d'Austria il 3 aprile 1739 ) showing a day and a night view of the Piazza del Campo on the day of the Palio di Siena , a Sonderpalio in April 1739, show.

The four mosaic pictures of the Amber Room , which was lost in World War II, also go back to drawings by Zocchi.
