Gleisi Helena Hoffmann (born September 6, 1965 in Curitiba , Paraná ) is a Brazilian lawyer and politician. She has been the leader of the Workers' Party (PT) since June 3, 2017, succeeding Rui Falcão.

Life and accomplishments

Hoffmann had joined the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) in 1983 at a time when the Brazilian student movement was reviving, and she also appeared as a student leader in the mid-1980s. Gleisi Hoffmann has been a member of the workers' party since 1989. In October 2010 she was elected Senator of the State of Paraná , but only briefly exercised her mandate, as she was appointed the 43rd Head of Cabinet of Brazil (Ministra da Casa Civil) on June 8, 2011. She held the office until February 2, 2014, her successor as head of cabinet was the former Minister of Education Aloízio Mercadante . On February 3, Hoffmann returned to her temporarily suspended mandate as senator.

In the elections in Brazil in 2018 , she was elected to the national congress for the 56th legislative period with 3.71% of the votes in her home country.

Gleisi Hoffmann is married to the Brazilian Minister of Communications, Paulo Bernardo , and has two children.

Operation Lava Jato

Alberto Youssef testified in the context of an agreement in the criminal proceedings during the investigation of Operation Lava Jato that Hoffmann had received funds of R 1 million in the 2010 elections . Paulo Roberto Costa , ex-director at Petrobras and charged with corruption, confirmed in a statement that this was done on the occasion of her husband. Gleisi Hoffmann and Paulo Bernardo denied these allegations. According to the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper , Bernardo's name was mentioned in the investigation in January 2015. On March 6, 2015, Gleisi Hoffmann's name appeared, along with that of several dozen others, on a list of people against whom Teori Zavascki , in office as Minister for the Supreme Federal Court, the Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF), was a police investigation according to PET -5257 were carried out. On September 23, 2015, the member of the STF Dias Toffoli announced the decision that the investigations against Gleisi Hoffmann would be suspended, since Operation Lava Jato only dealt with Petrobras and not with other areas.

On September 5, 2017, Attorney General Rodrigo Janot tried her again before the STF.
