history

Already the Celts are likely to have settled Hemmaberg , which is located in the municipality of Globasnitz . On the Hemmaberg there was a place of worship that was dedicated to the god Jovenat.

With the Roman occupation of the Noricum in 15 BC. From the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius , settlements also emerged in the valley floor. Excavation finds indicate a military camp and its importance as a relay station along the Roman road from Virunum (near Maria Saal ) to Celeia ( Celje ) via the Luschasattel. The settlement center in the area of today's capital Globasnitz was called Iuenna, from which the name " Jauntal " is derived. Iuenna belonged to the urban area of Virunum. To the west and east of the ancient and today's settlements are ancient grave fields. The finds can be viewed in a museum in the center of the village. Valuables such as Eastern Roman glass, Greek porcelain, Roman wines, valuable textiles and pieces of jewelery or Roman floor mosaics were no stranger to the residents of Iuenna. Roman and Celtic gods were worshiped equally.

The function of the settlement as a military base and relay station as well as the trade route to the Eastern Roman Empire remained intact under the Ostrogothic king Theodoric . As early as the 4th century, the area was Christianized in the Arian faith . On the Hemmaberg, in addition to an older church, two early Christian twin churches built almost simultaneously were excavated, some of which were richly decorated with mosaics in the Roman style.

After the gradual settlement by Slavic tribes in late antiquity around 500 AD, the trade route became extinct and the valley settlements that were difficult to defend disappeared. Part of the population is likely to have withdrawn to the Hemmaberg again. What has remained is the Slavic population, from which the Slovenes subsequently emerged, although certain forms of cultural continuity and inculturation - as they necessarily result from the tradition of pre-Slavic field or river names - have come about . In the 1910 census, 1264 people reported Slovene and 21 people as the colloquial language . At the beginning of the First Republic , Globasnitz was the seat of a Slovenian parish.

The place name of Globasnitz was first mentioned between 1143 and 1163 as Globasinvilla . The church was first mentioned in 1265, as a parish in 1296.

The local community Globasnitz was founded in 1850 and was attached to the community Eberndorf between 1865 and 1876 . During the municipal structural reform in 1973, the municipal area was expanded to include parts of the neighboring communities Eberndorf, Sittersdorf and Feistritz ob Bleiburg.

population

According to the 2001 census, the community Globasnitz has 1,645 inhabitants, 98.2% of whom are Austrian citizens. 54.2% belong to the German-speaking and 42.1% to the Slovenian-speaking ethnic group .

96.0% of the community population profess to the Roman Catholic Church , 0.7% each to the Protestant Church and Islam . 1.7% have no religious beliefs.

The bilingual parish Globasnitz belongs to the bilingual deanery Eberndorf / Dobrla vas .

Globasnitz is part of the Slovene dialect area of the Jaun Valley (Slov. Podjunsko narečje ), which is a dialect of the Carinthian Slovene dialect group. The Slovenian language and culture have historically followed the development in the entire southern Carinthia and Jauntal region.

societies

  • Slovenian educational association Slovensko izobraževalno društvo Globasnica . In 1903 the Slovenian educational association Globasnitz was founded on the initiative of the local chaplain Ivan Hojnik and the first chairman Ivan Iekl. The aim of the association was to maintain and promote the Slovene language, culture and identity, which reflects the cultural-political context in Carinthia at that time. The main focus of activity was the performance of demanding theater pieces and the management of a richly stocked library, which was financed from the proceeds of the performances. After an interruption in the course of the referendum in Carinthia in 1920 , cultural activity was resumed in 1921. In the interwar period, Albert Breznik, who later became a member of the state parliament, was chairman of the association. The club also published a club magazine, the Škorpijon . An association choir was founded in 1927, and the first household course was held in 1928 by the famous popular poet Milka Hartman . In 1942, after the wave of deportations of Carinthian Slovenes, which also affected numerous club members, the club library was burned and theater sets, including 11 sets, were destroyed. The club protocols could be saved. The association resumed its activities in 1946.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Globasnitz shows the facade of the small Roman temple of the 2nd century adorned with Tuscan columns, of which three columns, parts of the architrave and the gable as well as other work pieces were found in Globasnitz in 1961 and 1963 and which, according to the investigations of Dr. Piccotini was dedicated to the local god Jovenat. Today, three of the pillars form a public monument in the village, pointing to the great ancient past of Globasnitz. The blazon of the coat of arms reads as follows: "In red, a golden Roman temple with a black vestibule, whose profiled triangular gable together with the architrave with the inscription IOVENAT AVG rests on four Tuscan columns."

The coat of arms and flag were awarded to the municipality on February 14, 1973. The flag is red and yellow with an incorporated coat of arms.
