Glory to Hong Kong sung at New Town Plaza

Glory to Hong Kong is a song that was first published on August 31, 2019 and was composed and written by a musician under the pseudonym "Thomas dgx yhl" as part of the protests in Hong Kong 2019 . The song is widely accepted as the anthem of these protests and has been sung thousands of times in public, with some even considering it the "National Anthem of Hong Kong".

The original song is written in Cantonese (Chinese title: 願 榮光 歸 香港 ). There are also numerous versions in English and other languages that circulate on the Internet. The original draft of the text was continuously supplemented by the Internet community, right up to the lavish orchestral version with professionally designed video.

The song is strongly identity-creating, especially since the line "We are Hong Kongers" is often used. But the song still does not offer a target for the Chinese leadership, which accuses the protesters of attempting to split off. That is not to be read so explicitly from the text. Beijing reacts by using pro-Chinese demonstrators against the protesters with their own songs, resulting in real "song battles".

The third stanza describes the persistence of the Hong Kong people in darkness and despair. It is presented with a somewhat less solemn character. The third stanza describes the perseverance of the Hong Kong people in darkness and despair.

The last stanza, with the most recognizable motto “Liberate Hong Kong; Revolution of our time ”, which is incorporated into the text, provides that the city will regain its fame and glory. She expresses hope for the future and ends the song with gusto.

English lyrics

We pledge: No more tears on our land
In wrath, doubts dispell'd we make our stand
Arise! Ye who would not be slaves again
For Hong Kong, may Freedom reign

Though deep is the dread that lies ahead
Yet still with our faith on we tread
Let blood rage afield! Our voice grows evermore
For Hong Kong, may Glory reign

Stars may fade as darkness fills the air
Through the mist a solitary trumpet flares
Now, to arms! For Freedom we fight with all might we strike
With valor, wisdom both, we stride

Break now the dawn, liberate our Hong Kong
In common breath: Revolution of our times
May people reign, proud and free, now and evermore
Glory be to thee Hong Kong.

German lyrics

Wrapped in tears and sadness,
filled with anger and disappointment!
“Cheer up!” We shout, our home is here,
freedom and democracy!

Despite worries and fear day after day,
we fight whatever may come!
“Step on the gas!” We call, our future is here,
freedom and democracy!

Stars fade in the dark night,
from a distance the horn sounds with full force!
Hand in hand, side by side,
we always fight
for our goal, for our dream!

The day is dawning, freedom for our Hong Kong!
Justice! Unity! Revolution!
Democracy and freedom for all eternity!
May the glory belong to Hong Kong!
