The Gmina wiejska Zgorzelec (German: Landgemeinde Zgorzelec ) is a rural municipality in the Polish Upper Lusatia in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship . There are 22 places in the parish. It has its seat in the city of Zgorzelec , which is not part of it as an independent municipality. Gmina Zgorzelec is a member of the Neisse Euroregion .

Geographical location

The rural community of Zgorzelec is located in the Polish part of Upper Lusatia, which has belonged to Poland since the end of the Second World War . The community borders in the west on the Lusatian Neisse , which also forms the state border with Germany. The Czech Republic also borders the municipality in the south.

In addition to the Neisse, numerous smaller rivers and streams flow through the municipality. The most famous are the Witka ( Wittig ), the Czerwona Woda and the Hennersdorfer Wasser as well as the Kesselbach. All rivers flow into the Lusatian Neisse. In the south of the municipality, the Witka is dammed up to form a lake - the Niedów Reservoir , also known as the Witka Reservoir. The lake is used to supply cooling water to the Turów coal-fired power plant .

Expansion of the municipal area

The parish covers a territory of 136.28 square kilometers. 71% of the municipal area is used for agriculture, 16% is covered with forest. The northernmost village is Przesieczany ( Hohkirch ) north of the Autostrada 4 . The southernmost village is Kostrzyna ( Trattlau ). It is on the Czech border. Farthest to the east is the town of Sławnikowice ( Kieslingswalde ) south of the Autostrada 4.

Neighboring communities

The rural community surrounds the town of Zgorzelec in the east. Furthermore, the rest of the western border of the rural community runs along the Lusatian Neisse and is also the state border with Germany . On the German side are the cities of Görlitz and Ostritz . Pieńsk municipality joins in the north . The commune Siekierczyn des Powiat Lubański borders in the east and the rural commune Sulików in the south-east . The municipalities of Bogatynia and Zawidów are on the southern border. In the south-east the rural community borders the Okres Liberec in the Czech Republic .

history

The municipality was created in 1975 as part of the administrative reform and until 1998 belonged to the Jelenia Góra Voivodeship .

The administrative center of the municipality is located in the north of Zgorzelec at the intersection of Ulica Lubańska and Ulica Tadeusza Kościuszki.

Community leader

Between 1986 and 2014 Kazimierz Janik was the community leader. In 2014 Piotr Machaj was elected Wójt of the municipality.

Municipal council

The municipal council consists of 14 members and was last elected in 2010. The electoral term is four years.

The coat of arms of the municipality was adopted in 2015 after a heraldic redesign.

The old coat of arms of the community shows the golden community area on a green coat of arms. The golden municipal area is surrounded by the flags of the two neighboring countries, Germany and the Czech Republic, as well as the Polish flag. On the left edge of the crest is perpendicular the name ZGORZELEC and level the word GMINA to read. Both words share the common letter G .

Transportation

The PKS Zgorzelec operates several intercity bus routes in the municipality. Most of the lines start and end at the Zgorzelec bus station.

Rail transport

The community cross several railway lines. There are passenger stations on the Węgliniec – Görlitz railway in Jędrzychowice and again on the Zgorzelec – Wałbrzych railway in Jerzmanki. In Jędrzychowice there is a connection to regional trains in the direction of Węgliniec and on to Legnica and Wroclaw. Regional trains with destination Jelenia Góra via Lubań stop at Jerzmanki station . The regional trains in the opposite directions usually end in Zgorzelec .

Road traffic

The Autostrada 4 from Dresden to Breslau leads through the northern part of the municipality. The Zgorzelec motorway junction is the first east of the Ludwigsdorf / Jędrzychowice border crossing and at the same time the only junction in the municipality. It is located between the northeastern industrial area of ​​Zgorzelec and Jędrzychowice in the area of ​​the rural municipality.

From the motorway junction, Droga krajowa 94 runs to the northeast, largely parallel to Autostrada 4 and Droga krajowa 30 runs east to Lubań. The roads to the north and south have the status of Droga wojewódzka (DW). The DW 351 leads north to Pieńsk. DW 352 to Bogatynia and DW 355 to Zawidów lead south.
