Godesberg-Villenviertel is a district of the federal city of Bonn in the Bad Godesberg district . The villa district is part of the so-called Rheinviertel .

history

The area of the second Godesberg villa district between Rüngsdorf , Plittersdorf , the railway line on the left bank of the Rhine and the Rhine was developed and developed for the most part from 1888 onwards , following the quarter with representative villas in the south of the town center . Already existing structural points of contact in the area were the villa of the mayor Carl August von Groote (built 1862/63) and the Protestant Church of the Redeemer (built 1878-80), both located on the southern edge of today's villa district in the area of the Rüngsdorf district. The development of alignment plans was initially carried out together with the communities of Plittersdorf and Rüngsdorf, which were only incorporated into the community of Godesberg in 1899, and from 1903 on the basis of an overall concept by the Cologne city planner Josef Stübben . Above all wealthy pensioners from the Cologne area built representative townhouses here, initially mainly villas and double villas in the style of historicism , later also in the art nouveau style . In the 1920s, objects were added that can be assigned to Art Deco and, in some cases, to New Objectivity . The Catholic Herz-Jesu-Kirche was built in 1906 and expanded in 1936.

It was first popularly known as the villa district , but was later also called that by the city administration. After Bonn became the seat of government of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949 , many of the houses were used as embassy buildings or by organizations and interest groups. The most important embassy offices in the villa district included those of Greece / Cameroon ( Rheinallee 76 ), Pakistan ( Rheinallee 24 ) and Iraq ( Dürenstrasse 33 ). Some of the properties have been or are still being used since the relocation of the seat of government to Berlin (1999) as branch offices or consulates (including a branch office of the Libyan embassy ). The well-preserved Wilhelminian style houses are still considered a showcase address.

"Despite the elimination of trees in the avenue and front gardens as well as the increasing density of the residential area to this day, large parts of the residential area give the unique impression of an upper-class quarter at the turn of the century."

- Andreas Denk (1997)
