The Gulf of Fonseca ( Spanish : Golfo de Fonseca ) is a sea bay in Central America .
The gulf is bordered by the countries of El Salvador , Honduras and Nicaragua . It extends over an area of 3200 km². The largest islands in the Gulf of Fonseca are Isla Zacate Grande and El Tigre , which together with smaller islands make up the municipality of Amapala .
The three bordering countries were embroiled in protracted disputes over the rights to the Gulf and its islands . With the decision of the International Court of Justice in 1992, control of the Gulf was given to the three countries in equal parts. The islands of Meanguera and Meanguerita were assigned to El Salvador, the island of El Tigre to Honduras.
