family

Gonçalo is the son of General Joaquim Pereira Pimenta de Castro .

Life

After the fatal assassination attempt on King Carlos I of Portugal , Castro was appointed director general for overseas in the cabinet. He therefore accompanied the new governor of the Portuguese Timor colony, Captain Eduardo Augusto Marques, to his new post. It was feared that the old governor José Celestino da Silva would not give up his office voluntarily and that Castro should arrest him if necessary. Castro had concerns because he was a captain of the rank under Colonel Silva. For health reasons, he had in the meantime installed Captain Jaime Viera da Rocha as acting governor and had traveled to Australia with his wife . When Silva returned to Dili , he even offered to help Castro, since his father, General Joaquim Pimenta de Castro, was a friend of Silva.

Between August 1909 and February 1910 Castro himself was governor of Portuguese Timor. On behalf of Filomeno da Câmara de Melo Cabral , he led the office again between 1913 and 1914. During this time after the Manufahi rebellion, he restructured the colonial armed forces. Castro dismissed the commanders of the Moradores and disbanded their companies. The Moradores were placed under the direct command of European officers.
