features

The species are herbaceous plants or small shrubs . The leaves are varied.

The inflorescences are thyrses , grapes or ears . The flowers are hermaphroditic. The cup is free or overgrown. The overgrown crown is spurred in some species, and mostly two-lipped. At the top (adaxial) the corolla tube is deeply split. The upper lip consists of two lobes, the shorter lower lip consists of three lobes. The stamens are free. The ovary is above and usually two-sided. The anatropic ovules are in two rows per compartment or scattered about, rarely individually. Pollination occurs by insects ( entomophilia ).

The fruit is usually a capsule fruit , rarely a small, single-seeded nut fruit or a large, hard, four- seeded stone fruit . The seeds are rich in oily endosperm , flat, and mostly winged.

The basic chromosome number is x = 8.

distribution

With the exception of the species Goodenia konigsbergeri , which is endemic to Java , all species occur in Australia . The range of the species Goodenia armstrongiana , Goodenia purpurascens and Goodenia pumilio extends to New Guinea , that of Goodenia pilosa extends to Indonesia , southern China and the Philippines . All other species in the genus are endemic to Australia.

Systematics

The genus was named by the British botanist James Edward Smith in 1793 after the Archbishop of Carlisle Samuel Goodenough (1743-1827), a member of the Linnean Society .

  • Subgenus Goodenia
    • without section assignment
      • Subsection Caeruleae (Benth.) Carolin : With 17 species.
      • Subsection Porphyranthus G.Don : With 15 species
    • Section Amphichila DC. : With two species in Northern Australia
    • Section Goodenia : With 135 species
      • Goodenia subsection
