Google Drive is a file hosting - service of the company Google LLC . It enables users to store documents in the cloud , share files, and collaborate on documents. Google Drive includes Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms , an office software package that enables you to collaborate on documents, tables, presentations, graphics, forms and more. Files shared publicly on Google Drive can be searched using Internet search engines .

history

At the beginning, the services Google Docs and Spreadsheets were developed separately, until a combined application Text & Tables was published in October 2006 . Until February 2007 the site was only available in English. In the same month, the service also became available for Google Apps . In February 2012, Google Docs in Google Docs renamed. The reason given was the addition of further functions in 2011, which means that the name Google Docs no longer applies, as there are now also presentation functions.

On April 24, 2012, Docs was expanded to include generic cloud storage capabilities and was therefore renamed Drive . After an Android app was published early on , Google Drive has also been usable on mobile devices with iOS since June 2012 .

In addition to the Drive app, Google also released separate apps for Google text documents, tables and presentations for Android and iOS devices in mid-2014, as well as separate start pages for its Office solution Google Docs and the editing of Microsoft Office documents. With the so-called Office compatibility mode, Microsoft Office documents can now also be edited without a local Office installation using the Chrome browser and the mobile apps for Google documents, tables and presentations.

Functions

To use it, you need to log in to a Google account with an email address and password. The use of encrypted page transmission via TLS and HTTPS is activated by default.

In June 2007, the design of the homepage was given a two-column layout. Since then you can create folders. Since 2011 there has been an information bar to the right of the document list and a slide show view if the filter for images is activated.

Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms

Text documents , tables and presentations in Google Drive can be edited directly.

All documents can be released with or without write permission in three stages - specific Google users, all people who know their URL or freely on the web so that search engines can capture the content. In addition, the document can be made available to everyone as a website. A full version history is recorded for all document types. A chat bar can be displayed for communication between editors. Changes are automatically saved when editing. The files are encrypted between client and server and also stored encrypted in the server.

Interfaces

Google Drive offers interfaces for developers to connect other applications to the service. For example, there is a Save-to-Drive button to save the content of a website directly to Google Drive. A REST API allows third-party applications to access content in Google Drive.

Storage space

Initially, Google offered five gigabytes of online storage for free. In 2013, it was expanded to 15 gigabytes by merging the shared storage of the Gmail , Google Drive and Google+ services . Additional storage space (up to 30 terabytes ) must be purchased - apart from recurring time-limited promotions in which storage space is given away free of charge. The Google One service has been used for memory management since 2018. On Drive can be with the browser as well as a MacOS, Linux or Windows client access and apps for the operating systems Android and iOS.

Google Drive for large customers

Google Drive for Work

Google Drive for Work is a premium version of Google Apps for Work that was released in June 2014. It offers unlimited storage space, expanded file review reports and eDiscovery, along with - according to Google - "new, precise control that allows admins to customize their work with Drive, for example that employees can install the desktop sync client themselves". You can upload files up to 5 TB in size. Companies with fewer than five users have a storage limit of 1 TB per user. In a press release, Google assured customers that data stored on the servers would be encrypted, as was all information when it was uploaded or downloaded. Google grants premium users support around the clock and guarantees 99.9% uptime for its servers.

Google Drive for Education

Google Drive for Education was announced on September 30, 2014 and made available to all Google Apps for Education users free of charge. It includes unlimited storage space and supports single files up to 5 TB in size.

criticism

In the beginning, with the German-language general terms and conditions, Google allowed itself to continue using user documents. According to Google, this was a translation error. The GTC section now guarantees the copyright to its own content. Google grants itself extensive rights of use and publication, unless "If you are in Germany and access products or services from Google that are aimed at Germany". It cannot be seen from outside at what point in time this condition exists.

After the SESTA / FOSTA legislative package was passed on March 21, 2018, Google blocked or deleted numerous "sexually explicit" content from Google Drive with reference to its terms and conditions.

Availability

Google Drive requires a web browser with the latest JavaScript support. The last two current versions of Google Chrome , Firefox , Safari and Internet Explorer are officially supported ; however, other browsers can still function without any problems, depending on the specific application.

Shortly after the launch on April 24, 2012 , the Chinese government blocked Google Drive for normal Internet access in the national territory.
