Gordon Daniel Hayward (born March 23, 1990 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) is an American basketball player who has played for the Boston Celtics in the National Basketball Association (NBA) since 2017 . Before that, he worked for Utah Jazz for seven years .

High school and college

During his high school years, Hayward played tennis as well as basketball. For his high school team, he initially acted as a guard. However, due to an unexpectedly late growth, he soon developed into a versatile forward with guard qualities.

Hayward joined the Butler University basketball team after high school , coached by Brad Stevens . It impressed in its first year and won the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year award . In his sophomore year at Butler College, Hayward was convincing. He developed into a star player and led his university against all expectations to the final of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship , in which they had to admit defeat to Duke University with 61:59. The NCAA recognized Hayward's achievements with the Horizon League Player of the Year and the NCAA Tournament West Regional MVP .

NBA

Utah Jazz (2010-2017)

Gordon Hayward was selected ninth in the 2010 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. The Jazz acquired the right to draft at this position in 2004 from the New York Knicks via the Phoenix Suns . Hayward was thus the first butler alumni in the NBA since Ralph O'Brien, who was active from 1952 to 1953 . Early in his rookie season, Hayward struggled to get into the rotation of jazz to play. That changed in the middle of the season after head coach Jerry Sloan resigned and the Utah Jazz transferred their star point guard Deron Williams to the New Jersey Nets .

Under the new head coach Tyrone Corbin , Hayward played his way into the starting line-up at the end of the season. On the last day of the 2010/11 season, he achieved a career record with a 107-103 win over the Denver Nuggets with 34 points.

In his sophomore year with jazz, Hayward established himself as a starter. He also competed with teammate Derrick Favors in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge for Charles Barkley's team. He reached the playoffs for the first time with the Jazz, but disappointed Hayward and scored 7.3 points with an 18.2% hit rate. The Jazz were eliminated in the first round without a win against the San Antonio Spurs .

After leading players Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap left Jazz in the summer of 2013, Hayward took on the role of Jazz's first line of attack. On January 7, 2014, Hayward achieved a new career record with 37 points in the 112: 101 win against the Oklahoma City Thunder . He hit 13 of his 16 field throws, got 11 rebounds and distributed 7 assists. Although Hayward received many game shares and career highs, he failed to live up to expectations by having the worst throwing rates of his career. Still, he was the first jazz player since Pete Maravich to put up more than 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game.

In the summer of 2014, Hayward, as a so-called restricted free agent, accepted an offer from the Charlotte Hornets worth 63 million US dollars over four years. Jazz had three days to catch up with this offer, and in the end they did. The 2014/15 season went better for Hayward. He improved his odds and led the Jazz as the top scorer with 19.3 points per game. The team improved a lot compared to the previous season, but the playoffs were missed again.

The 2015/16 season was similar to the previous one for Hayward and Jazz. With the same performance, Hayward again missed the playoffs with the Jazz. In the following season 2016/17 Hayward was invited to the NBA All-Star Game for the first time after good performances and a good record of Jazz . He was the first all-star for jazz after six years and since Deron Williams in 2011. On April 7, 2017, Hayward set a new career record with 39 points. With the Jazz he reached the playoffs this year and achieved a new career record with 21.9 points per game in 73 games this season. After the Jazz had prevailed in seven games against the Los Angeles Clippers in the first playoff round, they were defeated without a win in the following round to the Golden State Warriors .

Boston Celtics (since 2017)

Hayward's contract with Jazz expired in the summer of 2017. Therefore, they offered him a contract extension, but he was also heavily courted by the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat . The contract finally went to the Celtics, with whom Hayward signed a $ 128 million four-year contract. There he plays again under his old college coach, Brad Stevens . In his first game for the Celtics on October 17, 2017, Hayward suffered a fracture of the left lower leg and a dislocation of the ankle in the sixth minute of the game, and was thus out of the rest of the regular season.

Hayward returned to the Celtics for the 2018/19 season and completed 72 season games. However, he could not build on his achievements from jazz times and only got an average of 11.5 points, which was the worst value since his second year as a professional.

At the start of the 2019/20 season , Hayward set a new career record of 39 points in defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers on November 5, 2019 . On November 9th, he injured his left hand in the game against the San Antonio Spurs , which means he will miss the Celtics for several weeks.

National team

In 2009 Hayward won the U19 Basketball World Cup in New Zealand with the US team . He was elected to the all tournament team. Hayward was part of the extended squad of the American national basketball team for the 2014 Basketball World Cup. However, he did not make the final jump into the US team. In 2016 he was one of the final players to go to the 2016 Olympic Games , but Hayward refused to participate for family reasons.

Others

Hayward is married and has three daughters. He has a twin sister. At Butler University, Hayward studied computer engineering , but dropped out in favor of the NBA career. He is also a passionate computer gamer and has played in the IGN Pro League. Some of the games he prefers to play are Starcraft II and League of Legends .
