Gothic - Magazine for Underground Culture is a music and culture magazine for the alternative and black scene . Originally conceived as a dark wave and gothic rock magazine, at the end of the 1990s the focus shifted to metal , medieval rock , new German hardness , electro and future pop . The magazine is published quarterly by Dark-Media-Verlag and is available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

history

Jörg Bartscher-Kleudgen (singer of the gothic rock band The House of Usher ) brought out the first issue in February 1990, at that time still with the subtitle Magazin für Psychedelic , as a hand-copied magazine with a circulation of around 300 copies. In 1993, with issue 20, a glossy magazine appeared for the first time in A4 format and a vinyl single as a booklet supplement, which was replaced by a CD compilation in subsequent issues.

In 1996, Martin Sprissler ( Kain's children ) took over the editorial management and, despite the continued use of the title, expanded the magazine into a cross-scene independent medium. Meanwhile, Kleudgen devoted himself to his similarly designed magazine The Gothic Grimoire . A year later, Gothic magazine had a circulation of 40,000 units, which was increased to 48,000 by the turn of the millennium.

content

The magazine is mainly dedicated to topics from the alternative, metal and black scene environment. Occasionally artists from the Gothic area are still being discussed, but this focus has gradually moved into the background. In addition to numerous interviews, categories for radio plays, literature, films and travel tips, the booklet also includes a set of color postcards and a CD compilation containing renowned artists as well as newcomer bands.

particularities

In contrast to other magazines such as Zillo , Orkus or Sonic Seducer , no well-known musicians were shown on the front pages, but members of the Gothic and Dark Wave scene, who were initially photographed by Felix Flaucher ( Silke Bischoff , 18 Summers). Even with the increasing shift in focus, Goths were still put on the cover until around 2005. In 2000, Peter Schilling replaced Flaucher. In 2003 Thomas van de Scheck (TvdS) took over the cover photography.
