The Madaba Governorate ( Arabic محافظة مادبا) is one of the twelve governorates in Jordan . The seat of the government administration is Madaba .

geography

The Madaba Governorate is bordered by the Amman Governorate to the east and the al-Balqa Governorate to the north, the West Bank across the Jordan River to the west and the Dead Sea and the al-Karak Governorate to the south . It is divided into two districts.

The climate differs significantly in the regions of the governorate due to the difference in altitude. The capital Madaba is 798 meters above sea level, while the Dead Sea is about 300 meters below sea level, which leads to a double-digit temperature difference between the two locations.

history

Of the various empires and civilizations that make up this, the Moabites , Nabataeans , Romans , the Arab-Muslim empires and the Ottomans are the most famous. Several places in what is now the governorate are mentioned in the Bible , including Mount Nebo, from which Moses is said to have seen the promised land .

The city of Madaba is best known for its Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, particularly the Madaba Mosaic Map , a large mosaic map from the Byzantine era of Palestine and the Nile Delta .
