Quneitra ( Arabic القنيطرة, DMG al-Qunaiṭira ) is a governorate in southwest Syria .

The capital is Quneitra . The population of the governorate is estimated at 69,000 (2005). Here are the Golan Heights , which were occupied by Israel in 1967 in the Six Day War and later in 1973 in the Yom Kippur War . The area annexed by Israel in 1981, which makes up large parts of the governorate, is claimed by Syria.
