Grün (in common parlance usually called the island Grün for the sake of clarity ) is an island in the Rhine on the Rhineland-Palatinate side, which is formed by the main stream and the Lingenfeld Old Rhine . It is 240 hectares and was created when the Rhine was straightened out . The island belongs to the city of Germersheim .

Surname

The island takes its name from the fact that it was originally an untouched Rhine floodplain. Today, according to the development plan, it is an industrial site, but it is also used for agriculture.

history

The settlement of the Banat Germans during the flood in 1955 ( Historical Image Archive of the Federal Waterways )

In 1943, a Dutch family established an estate on the island of Grün through the mediation of the Reich Nutrition Service, mainly to grow vegetables there. In 1944 (according to another source in 1946) the island was settled by 60 refugee Banat Germans from the area of Temesvar . They built a village with thatched farmhouses, grew potatoes and beets on 85 hectares, and raised chickens. In 1955, the island was completely flooded after alleged vehicles of the US armed forces, which were taking evacuation measures due to a prevailing flood, damaged the softened flood dam on the island. After this catastrophe, the Banat Germans decided not to return to the island of Grün.

The rock festival 2nd British Rock Meeting from May 20th to 22nd, 1972, which took place on the island of Grün , caused a stir : the superiors of the city of Germersheim only found out about this festival and banned it immediately after ticket sales had started. However, it soon became clear that the mass rush of visitors could no longer be stopped and that holding the festival was the lesser evil. Therefore, the ban was lifted on May 18, 1972, and the festival went ahead as planned. Around 100,000 visitors listened to bands like Pink Floyd , Status Quo , the Spencer Davis Group , Uriah Heep , the Kinks and Wishbone Ash .

From 1969 the company Lion Refining Deutschland GmbH had plans to build an oil refinery on the island. In the following years the estate was also given up. In the course of the planning supported by the Rhineland-Palatinate state government, a long-planned exchange of land was carried out with the state of Baden-Württemberg, which swapped the island for parts of the Germersheim district on the right bank of the Rhine. The site was finally sold by the city of Germersheim to the company Lion Refining, which, however, filed for bankruptcy in 1972 without any construction work being initiated. Then BP took over the company and with it the site. BP's plans initially envisaged the construction of a tank farm, although in the longer term the construction of a refinery was still being considered. Ultimately, none of these plans were implemented again.

In January 1983, what was then Daimler-Benz AG bought the island site, which was now again owned by the city, in order to set up a central warehouse for car and commercial vehicle parts. After the first groundbreaking in 1984 and the official start of construction in April 1986, the warehouse was put into operation in July 1990. The Global Logistic Center Germersheim is today the world's largest spare parts warehouse in the automotive industry. Between 2006 and 2008, the energy company EnBW also intended to build a 900 megawatt hard coal power plant on the Daimler site.
