The Green Brink is a 134 hectare nature reserve on the north coast of Fehmarn , which has been under protection since 1938.
It consists of a 2.5 km long and up to 180 meter wide strip of land between the dike built in 1872 and the Baltic Sea . The construction of the dyke, on the other hand, was the first to create the Green Brink. Due to changed flow conditions, spit hooks formed , which later created small, slowly silting inland lakes. Only when there is a strong flood does salty Baltic Sea water flow into the small beach lakes .
The Green Brink is a breeding ground for a number of rare water birds . Up to 170 bird species are counted in the course of a year.
To the east there is a bathing beach and a popular kite surfing area.
