The Graian Alps are a mountain group of the Western Alps . Italy with the regions of Piedmont and Aosta Valley and France with the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region have a share . The Graian Alps are located in the southern part of the Western Alps. The highest mountain , which is undisputedly in the Graian Alps, is the Gran Paradiso , 4061 m. The mountain group of the Graian Alps has, compared z. B. with many mountain groups of the Eastern Alps, huge dimensions. The exact delimitation of the mountains, especially the French part, is not handled in a uniform manner internationally. According to the current proposal of SOIUSA , the Mont-Blanc group also belongs to the Graian Alps.

geography

The Graian Alps, like the Roman province of Alpes Graiae , were named after the Little Saint Bernard , whose Roman name was Alpis Graia . South of the Dora Riparia are the Cottian Alps . In the north the Graian Alps are bounded by the Aosta Valley ; in the northwest are the Savoy Prealps .

The size of the area requires a division into 7 subgroups. These are the Emilius group, the Paradiso group, the Ciamarella group, the Charbonnel group, the Sassiere group, the Rutor group and the Vanoise massif. In the Graian Alps there are three areas with a larger glaciation: the Vanoise, the surroundings of the Gran Paradiso and the chain of the Rutor and Sassiere groups. The mountains offer countless opportunities not only for mountaineers, but also for hikers. Also known is the Rocciamelone , which towers over the valley near Susa in the south of the Graian Alps and, at 3538 m, is considered the highest place of pilgrimage in Europe .

National parks

The Dent Parrachée in the Vanoise National Park

In the Graian Alps there is a well-known national park on both the Italian and French sides, the Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy and the Vanoise National Park in France. The two national parks are partially adjacent to each other, and the park administrations work closely together as part of a cross-border partnership program. Together, the two parks cover an area of around 2713 km² (core and outer zone according to IUCN categories II and V).

Major peaks

The following peaks belong to the Mont Blanc group :

Remarks

  1. This inconsistency in the delimitation of the mountain group does not only refer to the Graian Alps, but applies to the entire Alpine range, as there is still no internationally recognized division of the Alps into subgroups. France and Italy, however, have a uniform mountain group division of the Western Alps, which goes back to an agreement from 1924 (similar to the Alpine Association division of the Eastern Alps ), so that an 'internationally non-uniform handling of the boundaries of the Graian Alps' primarily from the perspective of the participating states of the Eastern Alps leaves.
