The Grand Crêt (not to be confused with the Grand Crêt d'Eau ) is at 1702  m the third highest mountain peak in the entire Jura . It belongs to the Haute Chaîne , the easternmost and highest chain of the French Jura, and is located in the Pays de Gex (Département Ain ), around 16 km west-northwest of the city of Geneva . The Grand Crêt is the north-eastern continuation of the Crêt de la Neige . It is separated from this by a saddle, the lowest point of which is 1670  m , which is why it is often not viewed as a separate mountain.

The Grand Crêt is bounded in the east by the plain of the Pays de Gex and in the west by the valley of the Valserine . To the northeast, it falls over the Montoisey ( 1657  m ) to the saddle of the Col de Crozet ( 1480  m ), which leads to the ridge of the Colomby de Gex . The Grand Crêt, built from limestone from the younger Jurassic period , shows characteristic karst phenomena such as sinkholes and cart fields . The fallen precipitation seeps into the porous subsoil and only reappears in springs at the foot of the slope.

The steep slopes of the Grand Crêt are densely forested. Below about 900 m there is mostly deciduous forest, above it up to about 1500 m there is a coniferous forest zone, which in turn is replaced by mountain pastures with subalpine vegetation. The Grand Crêt is part of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Jura and the Haute Chaîne du Jura nature reserve .
