history

The island in the Platte River, which gave today's City Grand Island its name, was discovered by French fur traders around 1700. In 1821 the name La Grande Isle first appeared on French maps. This island extended about 45 km upstream and about 15 km downstream of the present city. The area was ceded to the United States government by the Pawnee in 1848 .

In 1857, 35 settlers of German origin, including Friedrich Hedde , left Davenport and moved west to Nebraska. One reason for this settlement was the construction of the railway because the steam locomotives had to stop about every 200 km to take in water. These settlers reached their destination at the beginning of July 1857. Using locally cut wood, they built permanent shelters until September of the same year.

During the next nine years, the settlers faced some difficulties, including blizzards and conflicts between the Indians living in the area . An arson by an anti-German land exploiter destroyed the first settlement in 1859. When the Union Pacific Railroad was finally built through the area, the residents moved their settlement to the north side of the river where the city is still today. The name was retained.

In 1872 Grand Island was incorporated as a City. When the construction of the railway line reached the city in 1886, the population and industry grew. As a result, prostitution and the sale of brandy also played an important role. Gaming parlors were also built, but in Grand Island these remained physically separate from the brothels . In 1881 the city council passed a statute regulating prostitution. Brothel operators and prostitutes were arrested regularly, once a month, and released after paying a fine. This income flowed into the budget for the school system.

Rail traffic began in 1887. Sugar beet cultivation began in Nebraska around 1890 , and therefore a sugar beet processing facility was established in the southwest of the metropolitan area, the first such facility in Nebraska and the second in the entire United States after Albany, California , but poor weather conditions meant that the Farmers in the region soon stopped growing sugar beet.

From the mid-1890s onwards, the national trend towards morality and sexual hygiene also led to the fight against prostitution in Grand Island. The red light district moved to another district, but resistance arose here too. Finally, in July 1913, the last of the Grand Island brothels closed.

Tornadoes in 1980

On June 3, 1980, Grand Island was hit by a powerful supercell storm. Over the course of the evening, the city was devastated by a total of seven tornadoes , the strongest of which reached F4 on the Fujita scale , with the South Locust industrial park being the hardest hit region. The storm caused the death of five people. The city burned the rubble and buried the ashes. This is how the popularly known Tornado Hill was created .
