Graus is a Spanish municipality in the province of Huesca in the autonomous community of Aragon and is located in the Pyrenees . It is the capital of the Comarca Ribagorza and has an area of ​​300 km² 3395 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019), of which 2600 live in Graus itself and 900 in the surrounding parishes . The city is at an altitude of 469 meters. With her the Ésera and the Isábena flow together. In Graus, the Aragonese language is cultivated in the form of the Grausian or Lower Ribagorzan dialect.

history

The first human settlement in the area of ​​Graus was already in the Paleolithic . The first significant historical event was the Battle of Graus in 1063 as part of the Reconquista , in which Ramiro I died. In 1083 the place was finally conquered by Aragonese troops under Sancho Ramírez . The place was awarded to the monastery of San Victorían in Asán ( Sobrarbe ) for reconstruction and repopulation .

Peter II. (1196-1213) gave the place the title Villa Muy Noble y Muy Antigua (dt. Very venerable and very old place ).

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the place experienced an economic heyday, which was reflected in the construction of representative city palaces (especially in the Renaissance style), which can still be seen today in the Plaza Mayor and in other areas of the village. The Nuestra Señora de la Peña basilica was also built during this period . From 1658 the philosopher Baltasar Gracián lived in Graus in exile .

During the Spanish Civil War , Graus was considered an important local and commercial center.

Attractions

Graus was declared a Conjunto histórico-artístico in 1975 .
