The Great Fountain Geyser is a geyser in Yellowstone National Park , which is located directly in Firehole Lake in the lower geyser basin .

Eruptions

The geyser erupts every 9 to 15 hours. The height of the eruption is 30 to 50 meters and lasts about an hour. In addition, about every tenth eruption is particularly strong, which is clear from the duration and height of the eruption. These more powerful eruptions occur in the "hot phases". If the geyser is in such a hot phase, the eruptions can hardly be predicted because, contrary to the regular eruptions, they happen much later (up to three days).

The Great Fountain Geyser has its own parking lot, which also serves as a lookout point. In addition, the nearby White Dome Geyser can be observed from there, which erupts more often, but less often.

history

In 1969, Indiana University researchers discovered the thermophilic Thermus aquaticus bacterium near the geyser , whose DNA polymerase is used for the polymerase chain reaction .
