Great White and Jack Russell's Great White , two American hard rock - bands from Southern California. Great White had its most successful phase in the mid to late 1980s; Since 2011 there has been a new band around the former singer and Great White band founder Jack Russell called Jack Russell's Great White. Great White came in 2003 in the headlines as a result of a fire tragedy at one of her concerts in Rhode Iceland hundred people died.

history

1982–1991: foundation, advancement and successes

Great White was formed in 1982 in Huntington Beach from the remnants of the LA club band Dante Fox with the line-up of Jack Russell (vocals), Mark Kendall (guitar), Lorne Black (bass) and Gary Holland (drums). They signed their first record deal with EMI . The debut album produced by Michael Wagener was released in 1984. Sales were relatively weak, which is why EMI lost interest in the band.

The band's career really got going in 1986 with the self-financed album Shot in the Dark, after which Great White was signed by Capitol Records , a subsidiary of EMI. The band at that time included the singer Jack Russell, the guitarist Mark Kendall, the drummer Audie Desbrow and the bassist Lorne Black. The record made it into the top 100 of the US album charts .

The following album Once Bitten was released in 1987 in two different editions in the USA and Europe. In Europe the album also contained songs from Shot in the Dark, which was not available here at the time . Support tours for Night Ranger and Twisted Sister increased the band's profile. The two singles Rock Me and Save Your Love also contributed to the fact that the next album ... Twice Shy helped the band break through in 1989. The plate achieved double platinum status in the USA. The band was nominated for a Grammy for the song Once Bitten Twice Shy .

The follow-up album Hooked (1991) also sold well before the band's popularity declined , not least due to the onset of the grunge movement.

1992–2001: The popularity waned, the band split up

The band's star began to decline in 1992. The album Psycho City could not maintain the success of its predecessors and the band then lost their record deal with Capitol Records . The next record, Sail Away , was released by Zoo Entertainment in 1994 and flopped, as did the next two studio albums Let It Rock from 1996 and You Can't Get There from Here from 1999.

In the meantime, Great White came into action more and more often as a cover band . In 1998 she published with Great Zeppelin , a Led Zeppelin - Tribute Album and 2002 another cover album called The Final Cuts. In addition, a record with Latest and Greatest came out in 2000 , on which the band covered themselves and re-recorded some of their old songs.

Rumors of dissolution and line-up changes did the rest to scratch the band's image. Nevertheless, the band toured the country at regular intervals. In 2000, Sean McNabb and Audie Desbrow were fired. Desbrow complained that he wasn't paid. In November 2001 the breakup of the band was announced and on December 31, 2001 the band played their farewell concert. The live album Thank You ... Goodnight! documented the farewell concert. From 2002 Russell went on tour with his solo band, in which Kendall also played some concerts and he allowed Russell to use the name Jack Russell's Great White - featuring Jack Russell & Mark Kendall . The concerts announced in this way contained mostly songs by Great White, but also some songs from Russell's solo albums.

2003: The West Warwick Fire Disaster

The low point of her career was undoubtedly February 20, 2003 when a fire broke out during a concert at The Station club in West Warwick, Rhode Island . The pyrotechnics used set the ceiling of the club , which was clad with polyurethane foam , on fire and started a fire that spread rapidly. The fire, smoke inhalation and mass panic killed 100 people, including band guitarist Ty Longley.

At the subsequent court hearing , the band was also charged, but was acquitted on all counts. The manager of the band, who was blamed for the light show, was sentenced to fifteen years in prison but released after four years. After the disaster, Great White set up The Station Family Fund and raised money for the survivors of the victims through publications and concerts.

From 2006: The comeback

In December 2006 the band announced their comeback with the line-up Jack Russel (vocals), Mark Kendall (guitar), Michael Lardie (guitar, keyboards), Sean McNabb (bass) and Audie Desbrow (drums). For the band's 25th anniversary, they toured North America the following year. The new studio album Back to the Rhythm was released in the US on July 17th and in Europe on August 31st, 2007. In 2009 the album Rising was released. In 2010 Terry Ilous became the band's new singer. In 2012 the album Elation was released with the new singer . In 2018, Mitch Malloy became the band's new singer.

As of 2011: Two band versions of Great White

After Jack Russell had recovered from some health problems, he formed a completely new band called Jack Russell's Great White in December 2011 .

The current (2017) line-up of the band is:

In December 2014 the band released the song Hard Habit as an MP3 download. In January 2017 the album He Saw It Coming was released.
