Gregory Isaacs (2010)

Gregory Isaacs (* 15. July 1951 in Fletcher's Land , Kingston ; † 25. October 2010 in London ) was a Jamaican reggae - singer .

Life

In the 1970s he became one of the most productive and well-known studio artists in Jamaica. He released a number of self-produced singles on his label African Museum , which he founded in 1973 with Errol Dunkley . Many of his publications reflected the socially and politically “conscious” themes of roots reggae , but Isaacs was equally at home with interpreting the more mass-compatible lover of rock . His successes included the tracks My Only Lover , Sinner Man and Mr Cop , which were recorded at Lee Perry's famous Black Ark studio. A phase in the 1970s resulted in hits such as Border and Number One in cooperation with Alvin Ranglin's label GG .

Isaac's contract with the major label Island Records led to the release of the albums Night Nurse (1982) and Out Deh (1983). After his contract ended, he faced personal problems. He recorded for various producers and eventually developed a strong relationship with Gussie Clarke of the Music Works label. In the 1990s, the African Museum label continuously published all works - both by Isaacs and by the artists he produced. In the new millennium, Isaacs continued to be active in the studio and on concert stages. With the album Brand New Me , produced in 2008 , he received a nomination for the Grammy Award 2010 in the category Best Reggae Album.

Isaacs has had health problems since 2009, which in the summer of 2010 led, among other things, to the cancellation of a festival appearance in Guadeloupe. He then stayed in London for further medical examinations. Isaacs died of lung cancer on October 25, 2010 in London .
