The Gries Deco Holding GmbH is a German retail company based in Lower Franconia Niedernberg and operates under the brand name DEPOT a branch network for home accessories and small furniture. The company was founded in 1948 in Schöllkrippen as a company for the manufacture of artificial fruits and Christmas tree decorations and from 2011 to December 2019 belonged to the Swiss Migros Group.

history

In 1948, Oskar and Maria Gries founded the manufacture of artificial fruits and Christmas tree decorations in Schöllkrippen . Distribution was carried out exclusively through wholesalers . In 1969 son Michael and his wife Monika took over the management and established their own wholesale business. The son Christian Gries joined his parents' company in 1993 after an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk. The situation was bad. 260 of 300 employees had to be laid off. As a result, a warehouse sale was introduced at the Schöllkrippen location and the first branch for end customers was opened in Aschaffenburg in 1995 under the name Das Depot . Production was stopped and wholesalers bought directly from manufacturers in the Far East.

The logistics center opened in Niedernberg in 2013

In 2000 Christian Gries took over the management. The branches of the Gries Deco Company GmbH in Germany have been operating under the Depot brand since 2005 . In 2009 a sister company of the Gries Deco Company GmbH was founded in Austria (Depot Handelsgesellschaft mbH in Vienna).

On January 22, 2009, the Federation of Migros Cooperatives (MGB) acquired a 49.1% stake in GDC as a strategic addition to the Interio residential boutiques, which were co-branded into Depot Interio boutiques. As part of the growth strategy financed by the MGB, the stake was increased to 51.1% on January 1, 2011. Part of the program was the launch of an online shop and the opening of 90 new depot locations in 2012, although co-branding with Interio was abandoned in Switzerland . The latter kept the furniture stores, while the former residential boutiques were transferred to "DEPOT CH AG", which was newly founded in Winterthur in May 2012 , and were converted into pure depot branches. At the beginning of 2013, a new 150,000 m² logistics center was opened in Niedernberg. In addition, the participation of the MGB was increased to 90% in the course of the year.

From 2008 to 2013, the number of employees at Gries Deco Holding GmbH increased sevenfold to over 6,500, with around 400 employed at the company's headquarters in Niedernberg alone in 2010. While there were still 206 depot branches and so-called shop-in-shops in Germany, Switzerland and Austria in 2010 , the number rose to 420 in 2013.

In June 2019, MGB General Director Fabrice Zumbrunnen announced that he wanted to sell less profitable company divisions from the MGB Department of Commerce, including in particular Globus , Interio and Depot. After a partial sale of Interio in November 2019, it was announced on December 13, 2019 that an agreement could be reached with Christian Gries on the resale of "Gries Deco Holding"; while details of the transaction were not disclosed, it is believed that the MGB will have to write off approximately CHF 400 million in loans granted by the transaction .
