Grimmenthal is part of the municipality of Ober Maßfeld-Grimmenthal in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .

The pilgrimage site of Grimmenthal borders directly on Ober Maßfeld in the Werratal to the east . Grimmenthal and Ober Maßfeld have not only grown together locally, but also in reality. history

In 1497 Grimmenthal was first mentioned in a document. The place belonged to the Amt of Maßfeld in the county of Henneberg -Schleusingen. In 1680 he came to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen .
