history

Palais Bellevue

The old Brothers Grimm Museum was located in the Palais Bellevue in Kassel until October 31, 2014 . In administrative terms, the palace was not defined as a museum building. In order to make the exhibits stored at different locations accessible to the public, a fundamental renovation and expansion of the palace would have been necessary. This would have required the prior definition of the purpose of use as a museum. A variety of requirements would have been the result, for example the installation or extension of a second staircase with a lift and handicapped access as well as further interventions in the historical structure of the only former city palace of the landgrave / electoral house of Hessen-Kassel, which is still largely preserved inside . For these reasons, the city of Kassel decided to build a new building on the upper vineyard , near the Hessian State Museum and the Museum for Sepulchral Culture .

Pre-planning

In 2011, the city of Kassel announced an architectural competition, which was won by the Aachen architects Kadawittfeldarchitektur. Thus, in January 2012, the building design of the new building was determined and the building permit process initiated. The first groundbreaking took place on August 21, 2013. Construction work began on September 3, 2013.

Naming

Shortly afterwards, Kassel's Lord Mayor Bertram Hilgen called on the city's citizens to suggest names for the new Grimm Museum. 270 proposals were submitted and voted on in October 2013. The jury announced on October 22nd that the new building would be called "Grimm World Kassel", whereupon the logo design of the Frankfurt office Heine / Lenz / Zizka with the inscription: GRIMM WELT KASSEL was presented to the public on February 26th, 2014 .

Archaeological finds

Archaeological finds were made in the spring of 2014 during the ongoing construction work . 450 individual parts were excavated and assembled into a total of around 180 exhibits. Among the finds were, for example, poultry shears, bowls and gilded glasses. After an investigation it turned out that the pieces belonged to the Henschel family . The household utensils date from around 1945 from the small Henschel villa on the vineyard, which was destroyed in the Second World War.

completion

At the topping-out ceremony in June 2014, the Grimmwelt took part in the Kassel Museum Night as a construction site.

During the external construction work on the building in 2014, the company Holzer Kobler Architekturen designed the museum rooms according to the exhibition concept of the Swiss office hürlimann + lepp exhibitions. The Grimmwelt, estimated at 20 million euros in construction costs and also realized with this sum, was opened on September 4, 2015 after two years of construction. The museum manager from Dresden , Susanne Völker, became the managing director and was instrumental in the entire development and construction phase.

Visitors

Foyer and café

On the opening weekend (Friday 4th to Sunday 6th September 2015) 15,000 people visited the Grimmwelt exhibition center. With this, a good fifth of the number of visitors had already been reached, which had been targeted by Mayor Bertram Hilgen with 80,000 visitors per year. Around a year after it opened, over 150,000 people had already visited the Grimmwelt. Around half of the guests came from Kassel and the region, around a quarter from the rest of Germany and a further quarter from abroad. In 2017, the Grimmwelt was one of the venues for documenta 14 .

Exhibition house

The building, which is expressly not referred to as a museum but as an exhibition building, has a total floor space of around 4,000 m², which is spread over five floors. The exhibition area covers 1,600 m². 250 m² are available for the foyer, shop and service area and 65 m² for exhibition pedagogy. The freely accessible roof has an area of 2,000 m². Attached to the foyer and also freely accessible is the Falada café-restaurant, which is named after a character from Grimm's fairy tale The Goose Girl, on 175 m² . The Grimmwelt exhibition areas are located on the two basement floors. The foyer, shop, restaurant and function rooms are on the ground floor and the special exhibition with changing themes is on the upper floor. The roof terrace can be reached via two flight of stairs on the front and rear of the building or with an elevator from the foyer.

Adventure space Grimmwelt

Themed course

Through the Grimmwelt adventure space, visitors are guided from themed corridors to themed rooms that are marked with large illuminated letters, whereby the routes through the exhibition are by no means strictly specified. So you can get from Ä (like little ass) to Z (like slip of paper), sometimes in a detour, and cross the following areas:

The world of language and words

  • FROTEUFEL: The history of the German dictionary
  • WORD WORK: The infinite combinatorics of language
  • SPRACHBAUWERK: The whole variety of the German dictionary

The German dictionary of the Brothers Grimm and the German language are the focus of this section on 330 m². It is connected to the adjacent departments Kosmos and Labor through a module with a staging of the German dictionary. For this purpose, a differentiated range of games, knowledge and experiment stations is offered, whereby the visitors themselves should take action to find out which techniques the Brothers Grimm used to master the verbosity of the German language.

Cosmos and laboratory

Here the Brothers Grimm are presented as scholars of language and literature, law and politics, and their impact to this day is also conveyed to the visitor.

The world of imagination and images - fairy tale world

Multivision

Here four fairy tale rooms, each 125 m² in size, designed by artists and designers, are staged. This includes a multi-vision cinema in which excerpts from film adaptations of Grimm's fairy tales are shown in an endless loop on two projection surfaces.

  • THORN HEDGE: Through the thorn hedge into the world of fairy tales
  • LISTEN TO THE TELL: The sound of Grimm's fairy tales around the world
  • WOOD ROOT: The roots of the artist Ai Weiwei

The world of the Brothers Grimm

  • LIFE RUNNER: The biography of the Brothers Grimm in their own words
  • NACHLASZ: Some of Grimm's household goods, furniture, dishes and other things
  • QUITTE: The traditional cuisine of the Brothers Grimm in words and pictures

Treasury
