The great golden insect ( Chrysochraon dispar ) is a short-antennae insect from the family of field locusts and belongs to the subfamily of grasshoppers . It is widespread in Germany.

description

A clear sexual dimorphism occurs in the great golden insect .

The males are characterized by a green, slightly metallic shimmering color. The undersides of the hind legs and rear rails are burgundy. The wings of the adult animals reach almost to the tip of the abdomen . They reach a length of approx. 19 mm and are therefore significantly smaller than the females.

The females, which can reach a size of about 30 mm, are gray-brown in color. Their wings are shortened like a stub like the larvae, but specimens with fully developed wings are occasionally observed. The hind knees of the females are dark in color, while the hind legs and rear rails are yellow.

habitat

The habitat of the great golden insect includes wetlands, but it is also widespread on fresh to moderately dry meadows, on clear-cuts and on roadsides. Wherever Chrysochraon dispar is very common, it also colonizes suboptimal habitats such as dry and poor grasslands.

Way of life

The female of the great golden insect lays the eggs in the break points of woody, medullary stems of raspberries , goldenrod or similar plants. The tip of the abdomen penetrates approx. 4 cm into the medulla of the stem. The eggs laid in this way are protected by a rapidly hardening, foamy secretion . The adults appear from late June to September.

distribution

The distribution area extends in the north to Hamburg and southern Holstein .
