The Great Market Hall (Nagy Vásárcsarnok) , officially the Central Market Hall (Központi Vásárcsarnok) , in Hungary's capital Budapest was built from 1894 to 1897 according to plans by Samuel Petz . It is located in the IX. District , in the immediate vicinity of the Liberty Bridge and the Corvinus University of Economics at the point where the Kiskörút (Little Ring) widens to Fővám tér.

architecture

The basilica-like building with a nave and two transepts is based on a steel construction, the facade of which is clad with colored, glazed bricks from the Zsolnay porcelain factory . There are wide, heavy towers at the corners of the building. The entrance on the Little Ring is decorated with columns and figures. In the past, a canal led from the Danube into the market hall in order to simplify the delivery of goods. There are over 180 market stalls and shops on three floors, plus two supermarkets. The upper floor is taken up by souvenir shops, takeaways and a bistro.

Until 1932 the market hall was the largest and most important market square in Budapest. Even today, the architecture of the hall is one of the city's central shopping areas and is accordingly frequented by locals and tourists. The rooms are also rented out for events. There are fish stands and aquariums in the basement.
