Reports
background
The starting field was limited to 20 vehicles for safety reasons due to the relatively narrow and winding course. Since 23 cars were registered for the race, it was clear from the start that the three slowest of the training would not be allowed to race.
Because of Piers Courage's fatal accident two weeks earlier at the Dutch Grand Prix , Frank Williams decided against his private team taking part. John Surtees was absent as he was preparing for the first start of his own racing car at the next race in Great Britain .
training
Jochen Rindt qualified for sixth starting position. He didn't like the course as the many jerky changes in direction and uphill / downhill sections made him nauseous. The fact that a blown stone hit him in the face from the insufficiently paved track edge during training strengthened his negative attitude towards the racetrack.
Jacky Ickx took pole position ahead of Jean-Pierre Beltoise , who secured the best starting position of his Formula 1 career in his home race.
run
Jacky Ickx initially took the lead, but already suspected that his engine might not survive the race distance, as problems had appeared shortly before the race. On lap 15 he actually retired with engine failure and Jean-Pierre Beltoise, who had been second up to that point, took the lead, which he held until lap 26, when he had to head into the pits because of a flat tire. Now Jochen Rindt took over the lead and won ahead of Chris Amon and Jack Brabham .
In the final phase, the former leading Beltoise retired with problems with the fuel supply, but was still classified as 13th due to the distance covered.
