The Grand Commander ( Magnus Commendator ) was one of the five so-called Großgebietiger of the Teutonic Order . He was the representative of the Grand Master and represented him in the event of a long illness or absence. Like the other four large area members ( Ordensmarschall , Großspittler , Oberster Tressler, and Oberster Trappier) he was not elected, but personally appointed by the Grand Master. His official seat was the Marienburg .
The Grand Commander was responsible for overseeing the order's treasure and all supplies. He controlled the accounting of the Order Stressler (the major responsible for the finances) and kept the debt register of the Order. The Firmarie (old people's home) and the war system of the Marienburg were also subordinate to him.
