Groupe Banque Populaire ( German Volksbank Group ) was a French company with headquarters in Paris . It was the fourth largest bank in France.
The merger with the French savings bank group Groupe Caisse d'Epargne to form BPCE on July 31, 2009 created the second largest banking group in France.
On December 31, 2009, the newly created institute had around 37 million customers (including 7 million members), had around 8,200 branches and employed around 127,000 people.
structure
The group was organized in three areas with different tasks:
- Eighteen regional cooperative banks as well as the CASDEN Banque Populaire (for employees from the education, science and culture) and Crédit Coopératif act as banks for private and business customers in the regions.
- The institutes in the first area held 99.52 percent of the Banque fédérale des banques populaires (BFBP). This bank was the central institute of the banking group as well as the investment bank Natixis and took on the coordination between the member companies as well as joint administrative tasks.
- The third area was the investment bank Natixis, founded in 2006 together with the French savings bank group Groupe Caisse d'Epargne .
history
The banking group had its roots in the 19th century. It was created with the aim of giving small entrepreneurs, craftsmen, traders and other businesspeople access to banking services and loans that they could not get from large commercial banks.
- 1878: Establishment of the first Banque Populaire in Angers
- 1921: Creation of the Caisse centrale des Banques populaires.
- 1974: CASDEN is founded.
- 1999: The Banque fédérale des Banques populaires (BFBP) emerges from the transformation of the Caisse centrale des Banques populaires.
- 2006: Creation of Natixis .
- 2008: Takeover of banking activities from HSBC , u. a. the Société Marseillaise de Crédit, with a total of around 400 branches for 2.1 billion euros.
- 2009: Merger with the Groupe Caisse d'Epargne to form BPCE .
