Gualala is a place on the Pacific coast in California , about 100 kilometers north of San Francisco . It is located in the extreme south of Mendocino County and is an unincorporated area . The river of the same name is largely located in neighboring Sonoma County and forms the border between the two counties near the coast. Located south of the river directly on the coast, Gualala Regional Park is part of the Sea Ranch community-free area in Sonoma County.
Surname
There are several different versions of where the name Gualala comes from. Pomos , Indians who lived in the area, gave the Gualala River a name that means "water that comes down". The city got its name from the river.
history
General Rafael Gracie was granted a land grant in 1836 for approximately 62.5 square miles extending from the Gualala River north to the Mal Paso Brook. He used the land to raise cattle and later sold it for $ 10,000. This brought a lot of immigrants, most of them farmers. In about 1861 a man named Cyrus Robinson and his wife Elizabeth laid out a homestead for the entire area of what is now Gualala. They built and owned a hotel, salon and ferry in Gualala. They also oversaw the post office and the wells. Within a year they sold part of their land to the men who built the first grain mill in Gualala. This mill was built on the edge of a mountain gorge, now known as the Chinese Mountain Gorge. In 1871 the mill company started its own business. This camp (which was still working), the water tower and steps down to the river burned to the ground in the 1960s.
