Guatavita is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cundinamarca in Colombia .

geography

Guatavita is located at an altitude of about 2680 meters, 75 km northeast of Bogotá . The average temperature is 14 ° C. The municipality borders on Guasca and Sopó in the south, Sesquilé and Machetá in the north, Gachetá and Junín in the east and Tocancipá and Gachancipá in the west .

The municipality of Guatavita has 6963 inhabitants, of whom 2010 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The Tominé Reservoir

Guatavita was the religious capital of the indigenous people of the Muisca , whose most important sanctuary was the Laguna de Guatavita , which lies in the area of ​​today's neighboring municipality of Sesquilé . Modern Guatavita was founded in 1593 by Miguel de Ibarra. During the construction of the Embalse de Tominé reservoir , the old town was flooded in 1967. From 1964 a new place was built at a new location, which is now on the bank of the reservoir.
